The Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium is a group of 7 counties working together to problem solve solid waste and recycling concerns in Southwest Michigan. This is accomplished through cooperative programs, special collections, marketing, and education.
The Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium (SWMSWC) was established by a Board Resolution in 1995, with an interlocal agreement between:
- Allegan County
- Berrien County
- Branch County
- Calhoun County
- Cass County
- St. Joseph County
- Van Buren County
The main goal of the SWMSWC is to work together to resolve problems and negotiate agreements, policies, and plans in the areas of solid waste and recycling.
The SWMSWC is not a waste authority. Each county remains as its own entity to manage solid waste for its citizens according to its own accepted solid waste management plan. Each county may have up to two representatives seated at the board. The board is served by a task force made up of county resource recovery personnel.
The SWMSWC plans regional events that emphasize recycling education and ways to divert material from landfills.
