In June of 2018 a mother and son duo set out to pick up one grocery bag full of recyclables. Just 45 days later and they are picking up two to three pickup truck loads a week. This is how Sunshine Recycling got their start to make a difference in their community’s recycling.

Sunshine Recycling is a pick up service that will take your commercial and residential recycling and drop it off at the transfer station. They have grown very fast and see a need for this service in their area. This growth has been accomplished through social media and word of mouth. Many people have already been coming to Sunshine Recycling and asking about collection for textiles and compost.

At the beginning, the idea for this business came about through the character Sunshine, the Mascot for Sunshine Recycling. This mascot will be an educational ambassador that kids in school will come to recognize as they learn about recycling. By forming Sunshine Recycling into a nonprofit organization, they have the goal to receive more fundraising and get Sunshine’s name out there as a resource.

In the future, Sunshine Recycling has a long term goal to solidify and document their entire process of getting this business started. In doing so, they will be able to offer it as a guide for duplication. This way more kids can take charge and start their own recycling pick up service. This has been an amazing bonding experience for this mother and son duo, and one that Sunshine Recycling hopes to be able to model so any other family can create their own service and learn about recycling too.
