In 1989, Julie Cribley moved to Livingston County, MI and knew that she could not live without recycling. At this time, Livingston had no recycling program set up, and so Recycle Livingston was created! This organization started out as a volunteer, nonprofit and they aim to survive, not to make money. This is a true testament as to the goals of Recycle Livingston. They wish to do all they can to help recycling grow in their community.
All these years later, Julie has come back to become the Executive Director and help Recycle Livingston grow. At the first drop off in 1989, they collected 7 ½ tons of recyclables. Now they have grown to collect 460 tons, in the last year alone. This is a massive amount of recyclables and it was not done without countless hours of work to make it possible. A huge part of the drop offs success has to do with Recycle Livingston taking the time to reintroduce the organization into the public eye. After being there as long as they have, people tend to forget that they have these resources to recycle in the area. This is why education and outreach are such a large part of successful participation at drop offs.
When it comes to education and outreach, it is hard for organizations to find money in the budget, however this is one of the most crucial parts. This is why Recycle Livingston finds every opportunity they can to share their goals with the community. One of their most recent goals is to get their new facility up and running. They are achieving this goal with the help of their new partner, the Kellogg Family Foundation. The help they are receiving to build a permanent office building can also come from anyone interested in improving our environment and growing recycling. Every donation that Recycle Livingston receives, will be matched by the Kellogg Family Foundation. This type of passion to succeed is why Recycle Livingston has always persevered. A permanent building has been a project of theirs for a few years now, and will be a wonderful opportunity for them to receive some publicity for the outreach they need.
Recycle Livingston is one of Recycle, MI’s valued Partners and they continue each day to keep their organization successful to help the community recycle where they live, work, and play. We would love to thank them for all the hard work they are doing and the all differences they were able to make in the recycling community!
